Once in a while, one should take time to be thankful for everything in life.

I am thankful for a

great family (not rich but generally well-off and close-knitted),
great childhood (not a well known school but very stress-free),
great secondary school (not the school but the people i meet),
great junior college (one of the bottom but the teachers have the biggest hearts)
great NS (well not fantastic, but safe and sound)
great university (again, not the school, but a chance to prove that i can achieve if i put in effort)
great friends (good people with good hearts and quick wit)
great job (so far.. could have been worse)
great health (getting fat but no health problems)

Life can be good if one thinks of how many ways it could have turn out worse.

Guess I'm updating for the sake of updating cos my last post was back in April. Realised that non-peak doesn't mean knock off at 6pm. =(

Was looking through headhunt magazine and noted that most of the job offerings are rather specific in nature. They include Derivative documentation, Reinsurance sales, Human resource management, marketing and sales. If I were to be employable in the future at other financial institutions, I'd better prepare myself for the next step in employment.

There must be a backup plan as things might not be as rosy one year down the road. Circumstances can change without warning and one must be in control of one's fate and not let the wind steer the ship. This is especially true after knowing that not everyone gets promoted even after working hard for one year.

Audit in itself may present learning opportunities in abundance. However, if one does not intend to stay in financial audit/internal audit/financial accting, he must plan to further his specialisation somewhere where career advancement possibilities exist.

At the end of the day, interpersonal relationships count for much more in the businessworld. This is one area that I am weak in and probably need more training on. The ability to mask one's emotion is important. Though superficial, such an ability allows one to interact wih most people. The comforting point to note is that 90% of people do it and that it is one way to climb to the top.

As the election draws near, everyone must be aware of the following issues in order to make a proper assessment on his/her voting decision.

High cost of accommodation - Public housing (HDB) is suppose to be affordable. Although it is possible to pay off your mortgages (assuming one does manage to hold on to a stable reasonably well paying job), many people find that most of their CPF is locked in their housing. One does not have the option to capitalise on the rising value of their homes as selling off the place you stay in is simply not an option at all.

High core inflation - Nothing erodes savings faster than inflation. If you just look at the price of a cup of coffee in coffeshops, you will notice that the price of a cup of coffee has increased from 70 cents to a dollar over the last 5 years. This is a 43% increase in price. In contrast, wages for the middle and lower income group hasn't risen significantly over the same period. When was the last time you remembered you pay even increasing 30% in the same period?

Overcrowding If you look at the streets and around your neighbourhood, you might have noticed that the country has become a much more crowded place during the last 5 years. The infrastructure (especially transport) is bursting at its seams. Commuters cannot squeeze into trains and buses at certain times of the day. Some people might say that other cities like Tokyo, London and Hong Kong have the same problem. But then again, do these cities have COEs? Privatised 'Public' Transport companies have no incentive to increase the number of trips or carriages during peak hours. As a simple matter of logic, the higher the density of the passengers within a carriage, the higher the profit per unit cost for the company. Does developed country status mean that one has to suffer the indignity of squeezing in the carriage?

The tax burden The coffeeshop uncle, cleaners and childcare assistants earn $30 a day and spend $20 on food, transport and accommodation. (66%) The professionals (think lawyers, doctors and bankers) and businessmen earn $400 a day and spend $50 on food, $50 on their cars $100 on the condo a day. (50%) The tax burden on the rich might be higher, but tax forms a higher percentage of the spending of the poor. $700 payoff every 4 years isn't going to help a struggling person over 1,460 days.. If the tax system is suppose to be progressive, then please impose a tax on luxury items such as yachts, designer bags and extravagant dinners. The tax from these unnecessary expenditures can then be channeled into cheaper housing and education for all Singaporeans. It is pretty disgusting to see dinners costing $200 per pax when a person earns nowhere near that amount in a week. (Disclaimer: This is a non-political entry. Just some points that every Singaporean should consider.)

Time for a mid peak update! Just endured a month's worth of 14hr work days and looking at another month of hard work at least. Thank god for the weekends to gather my thoughts and rest my ass.

The stock market is volatile (whats new?) and I still do not have the slightest inkling of which stocks to invest in. The foreign exchange market looks pretty exciting for now. But then going into FX would probably be the most risky thing to do now. Guess I should gather my resources and wait for an opportunity before striking again.

French classes were tough but an eye-opener nevertheless. Thinking of learning malay as well but don't know whether I have the determination and time to complete the entire course. I'll put that thought away for a while.

My 5 year old laptop is close to its death. Perhaps I can squeeze another few months out of it. Now would be a good time to scout for either a good pc or mac just in case lappy decides to die on me.

After being in the workforce for 1.5 years, my experience has reinforced my beliefs that power, fame and wealth are inevitably a measure of the status and success of a person. Say what you want about money and vanity. Money in itself isn't evil. It is the lack of which that is evil.

The lack of coherence in this posting is quite disturbing. Maybe it is the best reflection of my mind at this moment in time. There is no clear direction for me now. Just biding and waiting for the next chance to strike or continue waiting...

1.Eat less. More often. Rather than eating large meals, chop up your eating into smaller portions throughout the day. I found myself eating 3 meals most days and having a snack around 3pm as well as another in the evening. That was enough to keep me from feeling hungry while still eating less in total.

2.Don't eat right before going to bed. I've read this numerous times and don't get why it works, but it does. I set a limit of 3 hours. So I planned to go to bed at midnight, I wouldn't eat past 9pm.

3.Brush your teeth early. For whatever reason, I won't eat when my teeth still feel clean. By brushing them several hours before bed, it was easier to accomplish #2.

4.Kick the sugar habit. If you drink sugared soft drinks (I used to be a Mt. Dew and Coke fan), replace them either with their diet counterparts or water. This can make a very, very big difference.

5.Eat vegetables before the main course. Whenever possible, I'd make sure to have an ample serving of a vegetable (you get very few calories for the amount you eat) before eating the denser main course--often a meat or fish. You'll need less of the dense stuff to be happy.

6.Update your spreadsheet daily. Keeping a running count will help you ration out the rest of your daily calorie allowance, which we'll talk about tomorrow.

7.Get used to leftovers. When you eat out, expect to take some of your meal home. If you eat standard restaurant portions, you'll almost certainly overeat.

8.Shop with calories in mind. When you're at the grocery store, spends some extra time reading the labels and nutritional information. You'll probably end up changing your shopping habits along the way. You'd be surprised by the how widely the calorie counts in various granola bars varies, for example.

9.Slow down! When you eat fast, you end up ingesting more food before you body has a chance to figure out that it's satisfied (not full).
10.Drink more water during the day. This is fairly generic advice, but definitely seems to help.

11.Trick yourself with gum. Sometimes we eat out of habit or because it just feels good to get some flavor in your mouth and chew for a while. Find yourself some sugar-free chewing gum and use it when the urge strikes.

12.Reduce the amount of breads, chips, crackers, and salty snacks you eat. A lot of starchy and/or salty food make you want to eat and drink even more. This comes straight out of Atkins diet culture.

"Lie to Me"

Was watching this interesting drama the past few days. In this drama, this guy was able to tell when people are lying or being truthful. Also, using the science of micro-expressions, body language and speech intonations, he is able to know the emotion that the person is sub-consciously exhibiting.

Some of the pointers:

It is a common myth that a liar does not dare to look at the other party straight in the eye. In fact, when a liar is lying, he tends to stare at the other party without flinching. This is to convince the other party that he is not lying and at the same time, he is trying to see whether the other party knows that that he is lying. (sounds logical rite?)

When recollecting a fake memory, a liar tends to speak faster and without the normal pauses. This is because there is no such actual memory to recall from. Hence, the liar would tend to speak faster to get the lie across faster and remove the discomfort and dissonance he is facing. (seems like a fallacy i often commit when lying)

If you want to test whether a person is lying to you about a sequence of processes, ask that person to reiterate with the sequence in reverse. A liar would have great difficulty in doing so as there were no such incidents in the first place. (not so useful cos people won't say the same thing twice and in reverse..)

These are just some of the pointers on the show. They are not proven but all of them sounds logical to say the least. So pple, take these with a pinch of salt.

This lady really impressed me today. She dedicated herself to helping a group of autistic children for no personal benefit or gains and she did all these with a smile on her face.

This extreme dedication and altruism shown by her gives people hope that kindness still exists and the world isn't ruled by cost and benefit analyses.

Just as there are bad apples in a cart, good apples are aplenty if you search hard enough.

Kinda guilty that i couldnt spend more time with my parents and grandma at the ceremony.

This feeling is so surreal. I will be going to Europe in 2 days time with smaller bro QQ (Nov baby) and 2 little gals Jas and Ade (1987s).

Dunno wat to expect from backpacking 30 days. Haha. Gotta feeling that this might be field camp x 4.

Guess this will be something really really new to me and the others.

2 movies in 2 days! Really behaving like rich kid when i seriously need to scrimp and save for grad trip. But those 2 movies were kinda nice though.

Gran Torino: for the acting, script and humour by Clint Eastwood. The other actors were rather raw though.

Departures: for the refreshing view that it gives to people who watched the show. Although its kinda "treasure your time with your love ones" cliche, the film does not come across as too cheesy in promoting this message.

Instead of living in the past. One should look forward to the future.
